MahjPlay Rules and Scoring System
Our scoring system recognizes successful hands, special accomplishments and attentive defensive play.
Winning Mahjong
Score the point value printed on the 2026 NMJL card.
Bonuses
- Self-picked Mahjong: +10
- Jokerless Mahjong: +20 Excludes Singles and Pairs hands
Wall Game
- Each active player: +10
- A player with a dead hand receives no wall-game points.
Defensive Play
If your discard completes another player’s Mahjong:
- Zero or one exposure showing: no deduction
- Two exposures showing: −10
- Three exposures showing: −20
Players may raise a rules question, but only a MahjPlay event official may declare a hand dead or assign a rules-based penalty.
Scored and Social Play
The first game of each round will be the designated scored game. Points earned during that game will count toward the event’s skill-based recognition.
After the scored game is complete, your table may continue with social play for the remainder of the round. These games will not affect cumulative event scores, but players may still earn recognition through play.
A player who declares Mahjong during a social game will receive one bonus drawing entry, with a maximum of one social-play entry per player during each round.
This structure gives every player the same number of formal scoring opportunities, regardless of whether they selected Casual or Lively Play. Tables may then continue at their preferred rhythm without additional games creating an advantage in the cumulative standings.
